Heavy Silence
~Deana J. Tavares
Today
I lost my words
I lost them
Within a flood
Under quaking rubble
Land sliding
In the mud
Windswept thoughts
Tangled
In wires and trees
Would it even matter
If they were seen
Knotted within stomachs
Lodged within throats
Mangled and shredded
Banished without boats
I think the words
Found their way
Up
To my eyes
Seeped out slowly
One letter at a time
Smudged
As they ran
Together
Struggling
To make sense
While my phrases
Tied with red tape
Now, a past tense
Impenetrable
Stories
Churning all around
Feet no longer
Standing
Upon sturdy ground
Words take on new meaning
Water means breath
Money and jewels
Are useless
When nothing is left
