Heavy Silence

  Heavy Silence

~Deana J. Tavares

I lost my words

I lost them

Within a flood

Under quaking rubble

Land sliding

In the mud

Windswept thoughts

In wires and trees

Would it even matter

If they were seen

Knotted within stomachs

Lodged within throats

Mangled and shredded

Banished without boats

I think the words

Found their way

To my eyes

Seeped out slowly

One letter at a time

As they ran

To make sense

While my phrases

Tied with red tape

Now, a past tense

Churning all around

Feet no longer

Upon sturdy ground

Words take on new meaning

Water means breath

Money and jewels

Are useless

When nothing is left
